What is the 21-step Process?
Murmer’s 21-step process is the procedure we use on every aircraft we paint…a process that has been proven by years of experience and proven results. We think it’s the only way to paint an aircraft. Click here to see and read about our process.

How do I choose a design?
Many aircraft owners want a new or classic factory design on their aircraft while others want a unique custom design. A variety of resources are available on this website to help you choose. Browse through the Project Gallery to get ideas or choose a design you like. If you’re considering a custom design you may want to work with a professional design service such as SchemeDesigners. Or, visit our Design Center to see some design examples and browse through our extensive design library.

What about choosing colors?
Visit our Design Center and browse through the paint color brochures. Most airplanes today are painted overall white with color stripes, N numbers, and accents.

What kind of paint do you use?
While there are several good coating systems on the market, we prefer using the Sherwin Williams line of aerospace coatings. This system has proven to produce outstanding results and durability.

What will it cost?
The cost of painting an aircraft can vary greatly among various shops depending upon the level of airframe preparation, the experience and skill of the staff, and the quality of the materials used. All of these contribute to the overall quality of the resulting finish. Complex designs, multiple colors, and the overall condition of the airframe can all affect the completed cost. The best way to estimate cost is to request a quote from reputable companies and compare. Keep in mind that the lowest price shop will seldom produce the best results.

Should I replace my windows?
If you’ve considered replacing the windshield or windows in your airplane this is a good time to do it. Replacing windows requires replacement of airframe fasteners and repainting the affected areas.

What about Stainless Steel Fasteners?
Many aircraft owners like the look of unpainted stainless steel fasteners on the cowlings, inspection panels, and other frequently accessed areas of the aircraft. Stainless steel prevents rusting screws and fasteners from discoloring the paint and also makes it easier to service the aircraft without chipping the paint. Each painting proposal from Murmer Aircraft Services will include an estimate for stainless hardware replacement.

How long will it take?
Most airplanes take anywhere from 4 to 5 weeks to complete. Airframe repairs, complex paint schemes, and additional work may increase this time. Replacing the interior will usually add 3 to 5 days depending on the materials selected.
